Do You Really Need Specialized Cycling Shoes?

Anyone that is serious about cycling, or even if you are an occasional rider should seriously consider getting a pair of specialized cycling shoes. I would even bet that many people have no idea that there are even such a thing as a special cycling shoe. Most people just throw on a pair of sneakers and off they go. If they only knew how much easier and better their riding would be if they had the right shoes. Sneakers don't grip well and aren't designed properly to reduce injury to your knees. The question is; how much is your health worth to you?
There are many differences between a well designed and specialized cycling shoe and a pair of ordinary sneakers. One difference you should be aware of is the lack of ventilation in an ordinary pair of sneakers. If you have ever walked for a long time on a hot day you know how hot and sweaty your feet can get. With a specialized cycling shoe the design allows for adequate airflow which keeps the feet both cool and dry eliminating the potential for fungus to develop.
Sneakers are not designed with the cyclist in mind. They are designed for walking and running. The specialized cycling shoe is designed with the cyclist in mind. They are made in such a way as to align the foot, knee and hips in the right position to reduce strain and fatigue. The proper angle will help reduce injury and strain, which will increase your times and allow for a much more pleasurable ride. For an occasional rider you will find that you can ride longer and harder with less effort. The last time I checked I haven't seen may people wear sneakers on the golf course.
Another important asset to the specialized cycling shoe is the specialized cleats or grips the shoe uses. Picture a baseball player or a football player wearing only sneakers and you can imagine that they would be slipping and sliding all over the place. This is the same concept with specialized cycling shoes. Each shoe manufacturer utilizes a different type of design but they are all created to give the cyclist the maximum grip for optimum performance. A sneaker just simply can't give you the grip you need.
So the question becomes, should I spend the extra money to get a pair of specialized cycling shoes? To answer this question you must ask yourself, is my health worth a few extra dollars? You can dramatically reduce the chance of injury by wearing the right shoes. I know that if you tried them you would never second guess your decision.
